Finished TAC Manifesto in 155 words

TAC Manifesto developed for Prospect 2007
--------------------------------

The Association of Collaboration (TAC) is an art project currently consisting of seven participants who meet on a regular basis to critically discuss collaborative processes and frameworks. Working within the format of a survey exhibition, Prospect 2007, TAC has developed the project: ‘Contemporary Art Mobile Response Unit’ to provide an open, interactive alternative to the curatorial voice.

The work attempts an intervention in the gulf between art and its audience, a complication of roles. With participation and critique at its core, ‘Contemporary Art Mobile Response Unit’ offers a forum for animated conversation, provoking interrogation of meaning and response.

By providing models that are suggestive rather than prescriptive, TAC seeks to equip and encourage visitors, empowering them with tools to think through aspects of contemporary art. The unit establishes an opportunity to share a critical response, to clarify and challenge. We're hoping to create blanks for the audience to fill in – and a place to be.

----------------------------------

Hi guys this is a summary of what we discussed to be included in our manifesto, please add to or subtract from it in the comments Andie :)

Working within the format of a survey exhibition The Association of Collaboration is a project with a critical rather than curatorial voice. Incorporating visitor participation TAC exposes the institutional framework from within. It's an intervention in the interaction between art and people. It's a confusion of meaning as much as it's a faciliation of meaning and of response.
The TAC seeks to equip and encourage visitors, empowering them with tools to clarify and challenge. We're hoping to create holes for the audience to fill in.

-there was also something about flowcharts being suggestive rather than prescriptive, I wasnt sure where to fit it in though, just wanted to get this up asap so the comments can proliferate a plenty before our next meeting :)

I really like to incorporate your description of us from your intro for Hue & Cry;
"The Association of Collaboration is an art project currently consisting of seven participants who meet on a regular basis to critically discuss collaborative processes and frameworks"
What does "critical rather than curatorial" mean? I think we mean we are providing [and providing a space for] a critical response to the surrounding show rather than an alternative curatorial voice - more explicitness needed
-also clarify what TAC is "within" in the following sentance, at the mo its hazarding into the obfuscating incomplete 'arty' sentance zone - danger ahead.
good bones though

Hey y'all, I'm not sure about the 'critical rather than curatoril voice' either... and all works incorporate visitor participation in some form... but I like the general tone of what we've started... something else I had jotted down was:

By providing models that are suggestive rather than prescriptive, we are hoping to create holes or blanks for the audience, prompting and enabling feedback.

Good idea Liz to include that basic opening description of ourselves too.

Anyway, see you soon to discuss more

Hi, my suggestions are in italics as it seemed easier to read.

The Association of Collaboration is an art project currently consisting of seven participants who meet on a regular basis to critically discuss collaborative processes and frameworks. Working within the format of a survey exhibition, Prospect 2007 The Association of Collaboration has initiated a project 'Mobile Response Unit' providing an open, accesable alternative to the curatorial voice. The unit has participation and critique at its core, providing an active voice and a place to sit for the gallery visitor. 'Mobile Response Unit' and TAC are attempting an intervention in the gulf between art and people. It's a confusion of roles as much as it's a faciliation of meaning and of response.
The TAC seeks to equip and encourage visitors, empowering them with tools to clarify and challenge. We're hoping to create holes for the audience to fill in.

Hey all, i have used Paula's draft and italicised my changes:

Wow you guys are really good writers..it sound freakin great! I still liked 'Contemporary Art Mobile Response Unit' more because it is more specific and just seems more interesting and longer and what, kind of funnier because it is using a term which makes me think of emergency services but with 'contemporary art' stuck on the front it becomes something else. On its own it seems too clinical like it could just be a medical piece of equipment.

Have been trying out the longer version of the title today and getting really good responses.....people are curious, makes them think of help.

But yep the blurb sounds really good, it seems to sum up what we are doing without being too arty obfusticating.........

yea WOW, good stuff!!!
i like Paula's write-up and Liz's additions. I agree with Sian though that it sounds better as a Contemporary Art Mobile Response Unit, because otherwise people might think 'a mobile response unit for what? i don't get it!' with 'contemporary art' included we can make people laugh, like'oh my god we've got a contemporary art emergency' and they'll understand what we're about better i reckon.
once this is finalised i'll post it up at work for the hosts but i think a more practical write up as Tom suggected in the so far most recent posting would be helpful aswell

Hey guys, I'm loving the draft so far! But... I wouldn't mind flicking around a few more ideas for the title - the difficulties people face in trying to unravel meanings in contemporary art are not blaring down the street with a screaming siren - part of the problem is that the 'general public' don't feel confident or comfortable listening to themselves - the medical/ emergency metaphor is not ideal for me.

Alternatives: A title Marnie has talked to me about and that I think could be fitting is 'Sympathetic Magic'. This is an apothecaries belief that the cure for a disease will carry a physical hint of the problem for which it is appropriate - taken from the Living Together section of David Attenbourough's The Private Life of Plants. Marnie would want some form of exchange for this title.. but the whole transaction seems suitable to our way of operating and aims for this project?

Or: Something more in tune with ideas we've been talking about - 'Relax', 'Try not trying so hard'?

But really I just wanted us to throw some other ideas around and 'Mobile response unit' is okay without the Contemporary Art I think...

General consensus and all that though...

Manifesto for City Gallery
I like mel's suggested phrasing changes to my draft. i'll work them in as well as the other suggestions and get a final draft up later tonight, then send of to city gall for their purposes once approved by y'all.
TAC Bio
we might need to work on a bio for ourselves as well, sometime in the future. this might be a good way of understanding and clarifying TAC's purpose.
Title
I used 'mobile response unit' in my draft because i wanted to try it out. I prefer the longer title, though. it is funny, functional and i think represents the purpose of the work.
the word 'unit' and the dry title suggest someting complete, autonomous, a whole unit working within a aystem. I really appreciate Marnie and Mel's deep thought on the title but find the suggestion too poetic it doesn't suit our big orange, informational, very functional unit.

Updated bio for Prospect catalogue:

Collaboration is the answer but what is the question? *
The Association of Collaboration (TAC) is an art project currently consisting of seven participants who meet on a regular basis to practice and critically discuss collaborative processes and frameworks. Current members were initially recruited through an artwork involving an open call for involvement. A number of these participants recombined to begin TAC’s ongoing collaborative experiment through the forum of Every Now and Then, a show designed to investigate relational practices at artist-run initiative Enjoy in late 2006.

Challenging the potential of a ‘creative democracy’, the Association seeks to develop their skills with regards to the collaborative process and consensus-based decision making. It is an ongoing project that attempts to distill and explain its own assembled collaborative models for others to make use of. hey i think that bio is coming along great. but we need to think abour this - sarah farrah asked if we wanted to put our names in the bio, as they are on the wall text.
presumably when people read the catalogue essay they will not be standing infront of the wall text...so.....
I for one think we ought to pur our names.

This is looking really great. New stuff I really like includes 'distill and explain'. Great short description of the way the project evolved and the Enjoy show.

So is this what we are proposing to put in the catalogue and then get Sarah to write something as well? Nice using the quote at teh beginning too. Appropriate as that started off lots of discussion for us.

I say yes to names. Keep it simple, as we discussed before, no conceptual reason not to, so why not?

Andrea said...

i like it! Yes to including names. Yea good idea to use the quote and to talk about our roots... so will sarah write on the Contemporary Art Mobile Response Unit for the catalogue?
I snuck down to the basement at work today and oh-me-oh-my that orange trolley is...beautiful
