What to do with written feedback - catalogue?

"People write so much crap -including me- but on the wall it is beautiful art..." Anon
True indeed! Among the notes I think there are some real pearls. I am really keen to resolve what wil happen with our paper & post-it responses, we have got loads! I think that we should put them in the back of the catalog as i proposed 22 Feb - see below, but what do TAC think?
I think that using them to write a real alternative to the curatorial voice would be a great thing to do with them, as Liz proposed (see below) I think that would change the work up a bit and develop our critcality - sharpen our tool if you like...If we can combine these comments into blurbs that imitate the institutional frame then there is a real presence in the show for those critical or bored voices. Once thus combined and recorded I reckon why not give the original postits away in the catalog? How cool that each catalog would be different thanks to TAC!
This would also solve one of our major issues 'wasted paper' and mean we do not need any more reseourse to contribute something great to the catalog. As i recall the ewall was looking good after the show had been open for one week, and toatally full after 2 weeks so there is not too much risk that it would stay empty for long. We should leave a few up for interest and to get visitors started.

________
I had an idea that we could start drafting up a more formal 'alternative curatorial voice' by sorting through and surveying/paraphrasing the responses. I rekon it could be tongue in cheek - " popcorn mountain ellicits a strong public desire to get naked and disturb in its pyrimidal perfection, to kick it, eat it, and ultimately sweat out the viewing restraint required to comply with the institutional directive - DONT TOUCH!!!"
or something to that effect - whaddya rekon? Then we could pop them in the same place as Heathers A4 info sheets..."
-------
During a meeting on the 22 february we discussed what to do with postits and other paper feedback. See below for those notes by Sian.
------
* Catalogue
-Possibility of adding some material into the catalogue.
There are approx 500 to be printed (actually 1500). Paula suggested that we put approx 3 (actually one) original response into the each catalogue. This would mean that they were one offs and that we are spreading and not owning the responses.
Personally I like the distribution aspect of this, and also it is material generated from the public not from us which is nice. I will check when they need this material, as we will need to see how many responses we have by then.
There was also a suggestion of putting some of our own material in there. I will check whether we are to be given any budget for reproducing material ie photocopying-
--------

So we keep talking about it and now we really need to resolve what we will actually do. The small Wellington group are meeting at the trolley Sat morning and it would be great to get some thoughts, esp from out of towners about what you think.
If you're keen on the idea of A4 write ups we could snail mail you comments and you (MEL and ANDIE and soon TOM) could assemple individual blurbs from the sorted responses? I reckon it could be a fun challenge! xx p

great idea to re-use the post-it notes by placing them in the catalogue!
i agree too that we need to further develop our alternative curatorial voice and i think para-phrasing comments and inserting them in with the 'Official info sheets' would be a fun way to do it (and I'm keen to help with that)
p.s. please check TAC email i think I posted some ideas there yesterday cos i couldnt remember how to start a new post, it's been too long! xA

I am in agreement about using the responses as our contribution to the catalogue inserts. I like the freshness/rawness of them, that they wouldn't have been processed through the gallery's institutional administrative and marketing machine. It would also make each of the responses included resonate on their own, as a personal moment in the larger conversation, then in a new context between the author and the reader. Redistribution - yes, a good use of the responses, the comments will still be present - sian is having a documentary marathon photoshoot - and by potentially being incorporated into the alternative roomsheets - which of course i am keen for. Once we know how many are needed and how many we have I think we will need to make a call about what responses we use - our selection process will be telling and needs a good logic/reason/feeling to guide us through the politicised terrian of editing/censorship/selection.
We need to hear from Mel and Tom on the alternative roomsheets idea, I will try phoning them so we can speed up the process - stay tuned for outcome!
p.s. Andie - i posted your email up - click 'new post' on the top of the blog page and enter in your username (usually your gmail account) and the same password as we use for our email account. xx l

REPORT BACK
Both mel and tom were enthused about the alternative roomsheet idea so: action stations!
Both were in the middle of something when i called so no chance to give them the full rundown but Tom suggested a meeting for this week so she gets a chance before shooting off to AK with peneloping and I have referred Mel to the blog (here! - hi mel) to catch up on other decisions to feed into - she mentioned she was feeling a little disconnected...

So my input is yes to putting one post it into each catalogue. I reckon we shouldn't really be too choosey, just leave any that are radically dumb ass but I quite like the negative ones and the grumpy bored ones.

Freshness / rawness yes, I like that too.

Alternative roomsheets are great. So we just need to decide who will do that or if we should each do one or what? Is there one of us who is good at layout stuff who could make a template or something so they all look the same? Or is someone up for doing them all?! I reckon it would be great if we could do these asap so that they have a chance to be dispersed and enjoyed for as long as poss during the show.

I will be photographing all the responses which I took with me today and then they will be free to send out to someone. I could organise them as I go that might be useful.

I also wonder if we should organise some kind of giving away event at the end of the show to release the rest of the responses?! We could see how many we can get rid of and then recycle the rest?! We could use the CAMRU as a stall in Civic Square and do gift making. We could fold em up so people don't know what they are getting? Or let people choose what they want?

Hi Mel!! We miss you!! Tyree is in New Plymouth and has gifts for you!!
