Conversational Ramble

some quick shots of a few responses from CAMRU

& some thoughts that have been floating around in me 'ed...

wanted to say thanks thanks thanks to Tom and Sian for taking the responsibility for the artists talk - a big thing to step up to, all public forum like! Sounds like there were some persistent questioners in the audience, (usual suspects!) and the angle that Heather Galbraith took on the self help language seems to be solidifying as her curatorial reading of our work - I'd be keen to hear more about that discussion, and to talk about how we are thinking on that (self help) reading...

Also wanted to mention that I was frustrated not to be there myself, to answer to some of the 'how did it begin' questions and any murky misunderstandings about group authorship that I was anticipating coming up - on reflection of your comment Tom, maybe we should have made it a priority for all of us to be at the talk - and i was also thinking (and Paula suggested) it might have suited us better to make our talk to the end of the exhibition, when the project would be a little more rounded up, and talk would centre around things that happened and conclusions we/public responses came to. No regrets, just thinking in terms of next time - always difficult with process based projects to get the timing right!

Glad to hear the scrap book is working - how you are using it sounds great Sian - I had an idea that we could start drafting up a more formal 'alternative curatorial voice' by sorting through and surveying/paraphrasing the responses. I rekon it could be tongue in cheek - " popcorn mountain ellicits a strong public desire to get naked and disturb in its pyrimidal perfection, to kick it, eat it, and ultimately sweat out the viewing restraint required to comply with the institutional directive - DONT TOUCH!!!"
or something to that effect - whaddya rekon? Then we could pop them in the same place as Heathers info sheets...

Cool, look forward to next meet up - x liz

Re: artist talk
i think you're right liz, we would have done better to asked the public programmes organiser "Do you have another weekend we can do our talk?"
Then we could have decided whether we wanted to all be there rather than be forced to contend with limited availability. I think the project is already making lots of sense, even though it is early days, but it hasn't taken on any real changes yet so that might have been nice to talk about, in a later talk.

also i like the idea that those responses and wee bits of paper can be turned ito a real critique of the curatorial voice by actually having a presence right thru the show. image people toting around A4 sheets of the same format that prospect made but with CAMRU responses like the one liz sketched out!
i think it could be fun to go thru the post its to dig out the critique, a good review process. what do you guys think?

g'day!
sorry long-time-no-blog! thanks very much for posting up the pics of the post-it notes etc. A few questions first...have you made the outposts more outstanding? what's the latest on the chartwell website invitation? are we able to ask the public programmes officer if we can give another artist talk?(easy for me to say since I'm not there!but just wondered if any of you were up for it, whether a second artist talk -at the end of the show- would be a useful way of evaluating our work?) if permission for a second artist talk isnt granted...perhaps we could set one up anyway? -no disrespect!
did the podcast eventuate?
I'm not just interested in the post-it notes but the conversations had with visitors,is there any way we can document these? Also, just thinking of the standard artist talk formula i wonder whether it might be worthwhile to place the show on the other foot- whether TAC might pose our own questions (or invite questions from visitors) to ask of the curator in some kind of floortalk setup?
sounds like all is going swimmingly! oh check out this link: http://www.jendelosreyes.com/openengagement/
it's a conference coming up later this year called 'Open Engagement: Art after Aesthetic Distance'
