Q: How is Collaborative Art Interpreted?
Hello,
I'm a Philosophy lecturer at Victoria Univ whose research is in the philosophy of art. Last year, a colleague and I were awarded a Marsden grant to study how to interpret and understand collaboratively produced art.
Obviously, your work is very interesting to our research. I was wondering how I might get more information about your work - either about your work practices, or about how work work has been received, interpreted, etc.
I'd love to meet up for coffee and hear more about your work, if any of you are still in Wellington. Alternatively, I'd love to correspond with any of you via email, or if you'd be able to tell me how to find any material on your work, that'd be greatly appreciated too.
Thanks!
Best,
Sondra

Hi Sondra,
thanks for your enquiry - how relevant indeed!
i am sure we'd like to communicate with you and your project sounds interesting, but we need to agree by consensus on these matters. since our PROSPECT project earlier this year, we have dispersed around the world.
we communicate mainly via a blog.
Is it okay with you if i post your request (without contacts ) on our TAC blog? It is the fastest way for us to get a consensus decision as a group - about anything.
also: the prospect project can be found at:

hope to hear from you soon,
Paula

Hi Paula,
Thanks for the quick response; I’d be delighted if you posted my request on your blog – especially if it speeds things up.
I first learned of TAC’s existence at the Prospect exhibit, and as a result invited Heather Galbraith to talk about collaborative art at Prospect for a philosophy of art course that I taught last term — and now I’m getting started on my Marsden grant more seriously, and really want to learn more about your work before I begin writing.
Looking forward to hear from some/all of you!
Best,
Sondra

Hi Sondra and TAC,
Ooh yes this sounds just up our alley. I have a particular bias towards philosophy as that is what my beloved BA was in! Three of us are still in Wellington, and the others are on the blog. I am always in favour of talking face to face, but would others prefer to do a conversation on the blog? We three could meet in person and post minutes and that could start a conversation maybe?
Also Sondra you may find it useful to trawl through this blog; there is lots of stuff you may find useful.

Hello!
This is exciting. I think it would be great for those still in Wellington to meet up with Sondro- even though I resent not being able to be there! But I think meeting in person is important as sometimes it seems TAC only exists as a blog these days and this opportunity is really refreshing. Sian, I think that's a wonderful idea to meet up and then post minutes with blog conversations to follow. I want to be involved!
Sondro can you tell us about other collaborative case studies you are looking at? I saw an exhibition at Uplands Gallery today- a group called DAMP (who have been going since 1995) you'll never guess what i first saw when i walked into the room, a circle of chairs! I'd just missed a meeting they'd had in the gallery -"Every Now and Then" styles!
except their chairs were positioned on a very high marble plinth-kind of hard to describe
here's a picture,

Also I know the girl who wrote the catalogue essay which talks a little about working in groups, maybe i can get my hands on some more copies and send them over - sorry for the digression!
Andie
hi sondra and TAC,
yes indeed i am all for wellington members of TAC meeting up with Sondra and sharing feedback from meetings on the blog - it sounds like an opportunity not to be missed.
perhaps we could email sondra and ask for some more details as to what exactly her research is centered around and what other groups she may potentially be looking at? ill do that actually right this minute, so i can feel not so far away down here in the south!
Hi all,
Choice opportunity. I like the suggestions - Welli meeting then blog discussion. It would definateley be worth taking note of her questions to us - seems like she just wants to have an informal chat to start with but if there was a more formal interview we could ask for the questions on the blog first, or we could use the same format as the Tim Wong interview.
I could try recording the meeting maybee if any one is interested ... I am learning how to use recording equiptment at the mo.
Andy - Funny picture of that meeting on a pedastool, ah ha ha - I think I would get vertigo up there.
Would be great if you could get your hands on a copy of the publication.
Hi TAC,
I have just emailed Sondra to let her know we are not far away from getting a response back to her (she mentioned she was on a tight timeframe) and emailed Mel to let her know about the invitation and that the 1 Week decision deadline is up soon ... Tom, did you end up emailing Sondra? Can you make contact from/ forward correspondence to/ carry on with correspondence from the TAC email account so we can manage email traffic, thanks!

Hi - sorry for delay - just back from Istanbul. Yep sounds good to me. Face to face is always best and if she has further questions etc blog could be useful.
Thanks and hope it goes well with Sondra, M
Hi everyone,
Just catching up on my blog reading (finally!) - a few comments and responses to some of the comments so far: First, I'm glad everyone's so responsive to my interests - it's refreshing to experience this much enthusiasm (esp via the internet!). Andie, so far, Deb and I have only looked mainly at one other collective (the Raqs Media Collective) and a couple of pairs - Gilbert & George as well as the Marukis. But, Deb and I realised that we'd like to look more carefully at some larger groups. So, thanks for all the information on the other collaborations on your blog (and for the reference to DAMP - I'd love to have a look at the catalog if you can find it)! Have you seen (www.collabarts.org)? They have interesting links as well. Liz: I'd love to have a recording of our meeting - I was initially planning for it to be informal. Of course, if we wanted further information for a paper, it would probably be best if we could arrange a more formal meeting.
Looking forward to meeting many of you.
Best,
Sondra
Hi! welcome to blog-saga!
Yes, we get pretty excited when visitors show up around here and especially fellow collaborative enthusiasts (if you don't mind the term).
The collabarts site is a great resource - full of scholarly texts, thanks, I've added it to our list.
I also recommend a visit to Govett Brewster to check out the Activating Korea show too - an interesting social history for collective activity to grow from and there are heaps of resources in the INSA Art Space Archive.
I would be keen for an informal meeting to start with, if it suits you and the rest of welli crew - I can still bring along a recorder - but I think it would be nice to establish some common ground before going on any permanent record ...
Look forward to hearing from you to arrange things, L
ps - Andie is sending a catalogue over soon so will bring along if timing works out and, maybe a question for in-person, but how does philosophy tie into your study?
Hi TAC,
How about a meeting either 8 Oct or 15 Oct? (those are both Mondays, which I thought you said was preferable)
I can meet anywhere downtown (or up at Vic, if you'd prefer), most times (preferably between 9.30am and 3.30pm)
FYI: Sondra has emailed us info on her research, check the gmail for an enlightening overview.
