Two-fold: the low down...

Hey guys
Welcome back! ☺
Tom thanks for volunteering to be the treasurer- you be a treasure! And congrats also on your show at HSP it looks really good
So in terms of this two-fold show, I’m sorry for sounding a bit vague last time, basically the focus is on curatorship students who are also practicing artists. Originally the exhibition was going to be a showcase for curatorship students to share what they’ve been up to. However I thought that might turn into a bit of a mixed bag and since Angela and I decided to co-curate the show together we've developed the concept for the show towards challenging curatorial frameworks through artistic practice. Some other artist/curators for example are examining documentation or the support materials that accompany exhibitions, one artist is working in collaboration with a sculptor to make an interactive object- whereby the viewer constructs the work, there are some amazing cabinets that are dying to be used as a wunderkammer but I’m not sure if that will be realised. I’m hoping to create a TAC reading area- so really I’m not proposing a new project as such for TAC, but rather I thought of using documentation of past examples (such as our Prospect room sheets) as a starting point for discussion about some of the issues that haven’t been addressed in our course (such as self-organised projects, working collaboratively and the perception/positioning of art that aims to be socially engaging).
Alternatively I could just create a reading corner without any TAC related material if you’d prefer, but, what are your thoughts?
Andie
p.s. guess what guess what? I got a job working as ‘Project Officer’ for the South Project!!

Congratulationzzz! yipee and NICE ONE :) have a drink on me!

oo
I
V !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks for the update, sounds like the project is coming together well. nice title too,

Re bits and bobs,
how do you think about and experience your role(s) in this excercize (jazzercise) from the TAC and Co-curator perspective?

are you presenting the reading room as an idea to develop from collaboratively - (and generate something new out of the discussions to use)
OR/AND
are you suggesting that the submission of documentation could operate like an outside review process on the ideas and artprojects contained in the documentation?

I lke the low key approach that I am sensing from you Andie (via the slight softening haze of the pixels).

do you want to get any specific outcome from the discussions? Melanie is using an interesting discussion technique in her touring work at the Dokumenta show at the moment. There is a real desire by the curators for the tours to function in the manner of discussion groups, circular and generative. She might have some insight into what kind of techniques have been working for her (do you Mel?).

I am wondering about how you will become a access point for us to experience the project through i like to think of how your experience will become primary for us, that feels interesting

also - what things are going to be generated from the show? Your way of describing the project makes me think that there are some tangible outcomes that you (curator(s)) want to work towards - have you got a mental image or list or anything that you are holding in your head at this stage?

oh great, i like these parts of TAC best - when theres cool stuff to talk about. thanks Andie xx

thank you!!
in terms of my experience of jazzercise (and mousercize) or my role in this exercise (from a TAC and co-curator perspective) i was thinking of blogging regular updates with feedback collected from the show. Perhaps I might leave a card in the gallery with our blog details and email address in order for visitors to contact us- should they so desire- as I dont think I'll be able to be in the gallery often except for when i'm rostered on to mind the space.
I guess I'm suggesting the documentation of TAC that I'm proposing could operate more like an outside review process on the ideas and artprojects contained in the documentation- as you say Liz- rather than necessarily as a way to generate future projects.

I think the most potentially generative aspect of the show will be the artist/curator talk, though at this stage I'm not sure if I want to try and pin point any specific outcomes...

Mel i've been reading your Dokumenta blog it'd be great to hear how you feel about your reporting back position

thanks for taking the time to ask me all those questions Liz, i think I may have skimmed over a couple. What do others think? Any suggestions?

speak soon!

xxA

HIya

Like the idea of the reading room and perhaps a place for people to leave ideas feedback experiences of collaboration etc etc? So it could function a little bit like the CAMRU but specifically on collaboration. Feels like this could be a good way to do two things; get feedback on what we have done and also to generate some new thoughts and ideas which could be impetus for new and exciting stuff for us.

Blog feedback good.

And well done on the South Project job. Very exciting.

yay, cool
maybe i leave a visitor comments book out with the reading room to collect comments? And of course i'll also advertise our blog, perhaps I could print off slips with our website on it, in hope that we'll get some outsiders commenting on/querying our practice?

sounds like the TAC presentation is developing into a conversation interface, a natural continuation of CAMRU - phase 2 perhaps? I thought this excercise would drift into this territory ...

Andie, I have been putting together the CAMRU resources with some of the comments that were still with our materials at the time of de-install. I started off thinking that it was a straight forward excercise of gathering only the resources we made but realised it makes more sense, in the spirit of the project, to include examples of the audience responses. The combination retains some of the original flavour of the project in operation and the responses have a really interesting conversation with our resources - can't wait for you to see the combo.

You have mentioned that you thought the room sheet was a good object to talk to, I think you are right, however, the problematics of the project are more obviously inhabiting the discussion between the CAMRU resources and the range of responses.

The package of guff is quite a considerable amount of information for an audience to process, especially as the reviews are yet to be included. You might need to edit or develop a more attractive or systematic way of presenting the materials if you do want to include them.

How do we present the materials off and documentation of CAMRU to a new audience in a way which enables the clearest understanding of the many facets of the project?

Are these intentions similar to yours Andie, or do you have a different angle? What do the rest of TAC see this project as doing?

If we are going to solicit comments from the audience as part of the presentation then I am interested to develop from the CAMRU experience - what can we do differently in response to the direction the audience took their Prospect responses in? Do we need to consider the new audience context? Should we provide an essay question?

Also, I was thinking that we could update the TAC bio/manifesto for inclusion in the project - I took a look at the one we submitted for Prospect and it makes no mention of the groups diaspora, which is a major part of how we operate now!

Hope all is going well for your project development xL

liz has just done a great job of collating all the resourses that we put on the trolley to stir people in prospect to respond to the work through CAMRU.
she is also right that there's is a heap of stuff and you'll have to work out a clever way to display it.

i also thought there was a lack of actual responses so i've just burnt a disk of the 4.5 gb of hundreds of high quality scans we made of the oringinal responses before giving them to city gallery to distibute in the back pocket of the prospect catalog.
i'll post that over separatly to you andie, as liz's resourses package sailed earlier today.
i have just collatted all the available files and sent them, giving yo the full range to choose from rather than my own edited version, in just the same way that liz included all the resourse we made.
all the best, paula

thanks guys,
i'm really looking forward to recieving the packages, all my christmases at once!!
i think i'll be able to better answer your questions once the materials have arrived- as i'm sorting through them i'm sure many ideas will present themselves and i'll blog y'all till it's consensualised. Can't wait to take photos of the show when it's up and post them on the blog :)

in terms of the catalogue, i'm writing a prelude but have asked each artist to ask a writer to write 200 words about their work. So far one artist is writing about her own work (she's actually collaborating with another artist which will be interesting to find out more about) and another has asked me to hook her up with a writer, but what about us? Shall we write our own text? Shall we ask somebody else to write about us. It's only 200 words as I wanted lots of different writing voices to be heard and some texts may be more like interview transcripts, it's pretty flexible as i wanted to experiment with catalogue formats, i just hope it won't be too chaotic! let me know your thoughts though :) and images for the catalogue too, do we use pre-existing shots or should i set something new up? hmmmmmm....

hi Andie,
I rekon you should make a new post for this ongoing discussion which begins with a summary of what has already been discussed - then also add your writing question to the meeting agenda post.
This post seems a little buried in the pile now ...
